Wheat Kings Aim for Stronger Starts
The Brandon Wheat Kings are determined to improve their play as they prepare to face the Kamloops Blazers. This season, they have consistently struggled to start games strong, having fallen behind by two goals in the first period of their last three matches and allowing the first goal in all seven games so far. With a disappointing record of 1-5-1-0, they sit near the bottom of the Western Hockey League standings. Head coach Marty Murray emphasizes the need for a better start, stating that being prepared from the opening whistle is crucial. Players like Chase Surkan and Jaxon Jacobson acknowledge that their slow beginnings have cost them games, despite showing promise in the later periods. The Wheat Kings also face defensive challenges, allowing an average of 5.57 goals per game. As they gear up to play against a formidable Blazers team, the Wheat Kings hope to rectify their early-game issues and capitalize on their opponent's fatigue from a long trip. Additionally, rookie Surkan has received recognition for his performance, being selected to represent Canada at the upcoming U17 World Challenge.
